District Championships Bittersweet
for Outlaws

South Albany High School, with its championship aquatic facility, was the location for the 3A/2A/1A District 3 Championships February 9 - 10, 2001. Teams from Cascade, Elmira, Jefferson, Junction City, Marist, Mollala, North Marion, Philomath, Stayton, Sweet Home, and Sisters competed in this newly configured district. 

The Outlaws suffered two early setbacks with the disqualification of the girls "A" and "B" medley relay teams but bounced right back with the boys medley relay and a best time of 2:12.98, qualifying for a second swim in finals the next day. JamieCundiff then set another personal record of 2:56.36 in the 200 yd Individual Medley, which seeded her fifth in consolation finals the following day.  In the 100 yd backstroke, Cundiff touched the wall in a qualifying time of 1:22.99, good enough for a second chance to swim. ChelseaMeudt competed against 59 other swimmers in the 50 yd freestyle and exited the pool with  a spot in the top ten and a Saturday swim. Andrew Hyde, Lee Pyke and Kevin Carlsmith added their names to the personal records list in the 50 freestyle in preparation for outstanding legs on the 200 yd Freestyle relay. The girls "A" 200 yd freestyle relay with ElizabethMount, Lexie Comfort, Jamie Cundiff and Chelsea Meudt bettered their entry time of 2:06.80 to 2:04.87 to secure another finals position for the Outlaws. The boys did not want to be left out of this action and squeaked into finals with a 1:58.35. Scott Schreiner led them off, followed by Andrew Hyde, Lee Pyke and anchor Kevin Carlsmith. In other individual action, Andie Lesowske recorded a personal best in the 100 yd backstroke event and Kevin Carlsmith raced fast enough to secure a starting block  in consolation finals. Andrew Hyde bettered his entry time by almost five seconds in the same stroke. Jacquelien Mansker recorded a best time in the  last individual event of the championships, the 100 yd breaststroke, and Elizabeth Mount advanced into the final swims on Saturday.

For Carlsmith, Perrine, Schreiner and Pyke finals action was even more dramatic than the prelims. All four relay members set personal bests to a ninth place overall, with a time of 2:11.72, just 1.6 seconds off another Sisters High School record. Jamie Cundiff continued with her improvement streak and moved from 10th to 8th, with a four second time drop to 2:52.46 in the Individual Medley. ChelseaMeudt broke the 29 second barrier and secured another 8th place for Sisters High School Swimming. In relay action, the girls team shaved a second and a half off their qualifying time and finished in sixth place, while the boys bettered their 1:58.35 in prelims to 1:53.56. KevinCarlsmith and Jamie Cundiff improved their individual 100 yd backstroke times again and finished the season with personal records of 1:14.8 and 1:20.16 respectively. ElizabethMount added another top ten standing in the 100 yd breaststroke event.

3A State Championships 2001
This year's State Championships will be held at the Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis, February 16-17, 2001 with 3A/2A/1A prelims starting at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, followed  by finals at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. For State qualifiers and preliminary results, log on to  the OSAA web site.
