Outlaw swimmers excel at Districts

The 3A District Championships in swimming brought  new records, top individual performances and an alternate position at the State Meet at Mt. Hood Community College, February 21.

Justin HedemarkJustin Hedemark crushed his entry time of 2:26.6 in the individual medley with a preliminary swim of 2:24.79 qualifying him for a second swim in championship finals. His 6th place and a time of 2:23.84 replaced the old Sisters High School record of 2:31.27 and was fast enough for an alternate spot to State Championships. In his second individual event, the 100 yard backstroke, Hedemark qualified for championship finals also and swam to a fourth place overall with a new Sisters High School record of 1:04.51.
 

Top finisher on the girls' side was Tessa Durdan-Shaw  with a consolation final spot inTessa Durdan-Shaw the 200 yards individual medley and the 100 yds breaststroke. Durdan-Shaw won the consolation finals with a life time best of 2:50.94, a 9 second drop off her entry time and an incredible three seconds ahead of Stayton's senior, Shawna Zimmerman . In the breaststroke Durdan-Shaw finished second in consolation finals with a best time of 1:22.90, 0.01 seconds faster than 6th place championship finalist Sarah Tofflemire of Philomath. Once swimmers qualify for consolation finals during prelim races, they may not move up into the top six  positions, reserved for championship finals..
 

Casey MeudtOther consolation finalists included first year swimmer 
Casey Meudt in the backstroke. Meudt bettered his entry time of 1:18.8 by more than five seconds and defended his fifth place (1:13.70) in consolation finals successfully (1:12.95) against Cascade's Adam Burlison (1:13.85). Pat Burke, senior and first year swimmer, powered himself into Pat Burkeconsolation finals in the 50 yards freestyle event with a PR of 26.95 and finished sixth with a final time of 27.05 seconds. Lee Pyke was the fifth Outlaws finalist with an outstanding prelim performance in the 500 yards freestyle. Pyke dropped 8 seconds off his entry time and clocked a 6:49.69 for place six, which he held during finals on Saturday.
 

Five out of eight "A" and "B" relays qualified for finals on day two of the District Championships and in the process finished second in consolation finals and broke the Sisters High School record Brandon Johnsonfor the 200 yards freestyle relay. Justin Hedemark (25.2), Brandon Johnson (27.6), Pat Burke (26.6) and Kyle Whipps (26.9) touched the pad at 1:46.32, shattering  the old record of 1:51.19 which was established by Nick Patterson, Travis Comfort, Eli Pyke and Kevin Carlsmith during the 1999-2000 swim season.
 

The girls' 200 yards freestyle relay with Tessa Durdan-Shaw,Jaquelien Mansker, KatlynDiener and Kalyn Brink  swam to fastest sprints this season and dropped their entry time of 2:17.7 to a 2:14.35 and a sixth place in consolations. The  medley relay "A" team with Andie LesowskeJaquelien Mansker(backstroke), Jaquelien Mansker (breaststroke), TessaDurdan-Shaw (butterfly) and Kalyn Brink (freestyle) swam to a best time in prelims and finished consolation finals in sixth place.
 

The boys qualified "A" and "B" medley relay teams for finals. During prelims, the "A" team with backstroker Casey Pyke (32.2), breaststroker Wil Hanson (36.8), butterflyer Justin HedemarkWil Hanson(26.2) and freestyler Kyle Whipps (28.6) finished three seconds faster than their entry time and secured a third place in consolation finals. The "B" team  with Casey Meudt, Morgan Mansker, Pat Burke and Brandon Johnson  all swam to personal best splits during Morgan Manskerprelims and finished sixth in consols.
 

Additional individual highlights of the Championships included Andie Lesowske's 200 yards freestyle swim and Evan Livsey's 100 yards freestyle. Lesowske dropped twelve seconds off her Lauren Andersonentry time finishing in 2:58.01 and Livsey bettered his best by 5.5 seconds. Lauren Anderson improved her backstroke time by six seconds.
 

All four senior girls, Tesssa Durdan-Shaw, Anna Evered, Mareta Lindley and JaquelienManskerMareta Lindleyended these championships with memorable swims. Durdan-Shaw swam best times in consolation finals, Anna Evered dropped 7.95 seconds off her 100 breaststroke time, Mareta Lindley achieved a PR in the 100 backstroke and Jaquelien Mansker swam 4.94 seconds better in the 100 yards freestyle.
