Swimmers challenge 4A teams

In the last competition before District Championships in Albany February 13 and 14, the Outlaws tested their strengths against 4A teams from Redmond, Mazama and Henley. Inspite of the opposing teams’ depths, the Outlaws swam away with a first place, several top finishes, personal bests and a new Sisters High School record.

Justin HedemarkJustin Hedemark won the 100 meter backstroke with a time of 1:12.17 in front of Brent Vaughan from Redmond and the 200 meter freestyle relay team with Casey Pyke, Justin Hedemark, Kyle Whipps and Casey Meudt raced to a new Sisters High School record with a time of 1:56.88, converted to yard times, four seconds faster than the previous record.

The medley relay was contested by eight teams with Redmond “A” clearly showing off some of the fastest girls in Central Oregon. Rachel Pilliod, Bree White, Kate Canja and Kalyn Brink competed for the Outlaws and finished in a time of 2:47.83 and in fifth position. CaseyMeudt sent the boys off to a fast start, followed by breaststroker Morgan Mansker, butterflier Justin Hedemark and anchor Kyle Whipps. Their combined time of 2:12.47 was good enough for third place.

Kate Canja and Rikki Glick were entered in the 200 meter freestyle distance and finished 7th and 8th respectively. Glick improved her time by six seconds. The boys did not compete in this event.

Freshman Jessie Swaner showed her allround stroke ability in the individual medley with a respectable butterfly leg, a good backstroke, and a powerful breaststroke and freestyle finish. The last few meters of the race Swaner caught up with Laura Thost from Redmond but was outtouched in the end by 0.7 seconds for fifth place. Justin Hedemark finished third in the same event.

Top finishes were achieved in the boys 50 meter freestyle by Kyle Whipps in third and Casey Pyke in 6th with a personal best of 31.46.

Best result for the girls in the 100 meter freestyle came from Rikki Glick who improved her previous time by six seconds. Jillian McConville and Aubyn Geser also swam best times.

Casey Meudt was the top Outlaw with a third place and a 1.5 second drop from his previous 100 m freestyle time.

Katlyn Diener was the only Outlaw competitor in the 400 meter freestyle. Diener swam a very even race and finished fourth overall with a time of 7:06.78  

Kate Canja led the last relay for the girls with a best personal split for the season. Jessie Swaner, Rachel Pilliod and Kalyn Brink continued the trend and their final time of 2:25.20, a best time by 1.7 seconds, was good enough for fourth place.

The final event contested by the Outlaws was the 100 meter breaststroke for the girls. Bree White bettered her time by two seconds and finished fifth.
