Several
individual and relay records fell at the Stayton Community Pool on
January 21, and
Outlaw swimmers finish first in several events against North
Marion, Stayton, Cascade, Mollala and Dayton High School. The “A”
relay won both the 200 m medley and the 400 m freestyle.
Justin Hedemark
and
Byron Womack
finished first in the 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle
respectively.
Casey
Meudt started the medley
relay with a good backstroke leg, followed by
Kyle Whipps
in a personal best of 34.1 in the breaststroke,
Justin Hedemark in a 26.2
butterfly segment and Bryon
Womack with a 24.3 in the
freestyle. Their combined yard time of 1:54.10 won the event and
replaces the old Sisters High School record, which the same group
of swimmers established December 16 at the Sweet Home pool.
The Outlaws’ second boys medley
relay with Casey Pyke,
Justin Dean,
Tyler Young
and
Clifton Williams
finished sixth. Pyke
and Williams
swam PR’s in the backstroke and freestyle.
On
the girls’ side
Aubyn Geser,
Jessie Swaner,
Kate Canja
and
Tori Carlson
contested the same event and finished fifth overall.
Kate Canja
dropped another two seconds off her best time in the 200 m
freestyle, which put her in a solid third place behind Cascade’s
Sarah Boehmer and Dayton High School’s Kellye Hildebrandt.
Justin
Hedemark and
Tyler Young
competed in the 200 m individual
medley. Hedemark
finished second behind Noah Brokaw and Young’s best time of 2:42.9
was good enough for fourth place.
The next
event, the 50 m freestyle, had 44 swimmers seeded. Stayton and
North Marion dominated the girls’ side while Sisters High School
took the top two spots in the boys’ line-up.
Byron Womack
defended his number one seed successfully and third seed
Casey Meudt
outtouched Stayton’s favorite sprinter Naoya Kita by 0 .3 seconds
for a second place. Rachel Pilliod was the top girl with an eighth
place.
Kate
Canja and
Kyle Whipps
competed for the first time this season in the 100 m freestyle.
Both swam to personal best times with
Canja
finishing second, only giving way to Cascade’s Emily Selander by
0.6 seconds, and Whipps
sprinting to a respectable 1:00.3
Event 18, the
100 m backstroke, went to the Outlaws with a first and second
place. Hedemark
won the race in 1:02.15 (converted to yards), setting a new
Sisters High School record and
Casey Meudt
took number two with a personal
best by over two seconds.
Aubyn
Geser and
Tori Carlson
competed in this event also.
Jessie
Swaner and
Katlyn Diener
were entered in the 100 m
breaststroke. Swaner
finished a very strong race in second place behind Dayton High
School’s Kellye Hildebrandt.
The
competition ended with another highlight for the Outlaws. In a
powerful 4x100 m freestyle relay, the foursome of
Hedemark,
Whipps,
Meudt
and Womack
set a new standard for this distance. Their converted, combined
time of 3:47.72 is a new Sisters High School record by about 25
seconds and replaces the old mark of 4:12.34, established by Kevin
Carlsmith, Scott Schreiner, Lee Pyke and Justin Hedemark during
the 2001-2002 season.
“All three
boys relays, as well as several individual races, will be very
competitive at District Championships this year”, coach Hedemark
commented. |
