at Sweet Home Five more Sisters High School records fell and many personal best times were established as the Outlaw swimmers competed in a three way meet with North Marion and Sweet Home, January 15, 2002. The boys team had come
with
a mission, and that mission was to change a few of the name plates on
the
record board in the gym of Sisters High School. The first record to
be challenged was
their own Medley Relay time of 2:04.73, established during the meet
with
Philomath a month earlier. Leading off the second event with a best
split in the Justin Hedemark added another new High School record with his 2:39.28 swim in the 200 yd Individual Medley, replacing Steve Nitcher's time of 2:43.43 established in 1999. Kevin Carlsmith then shattered Scott Bulloch's 1:40.59 record in the 100 yd butterfly with a personal best of 1:14.47 and Scott Schreiner continued the record breaking series with his contribution in the 100 yd backstroke and a time of 1:11.68. In the final event of the meet, the 400 yd Freestyle Relay record of 5:08.22 set by Scott Bulloch, Chris Clark, Eli Pyke and Seth Perrine had to give way to a new time of 4:12.34 swum by Scott Schreiner, Justin Hedemark, Kevin Carlsmith and Lee Pyke.
On the girls' side the
results
were equally impressive with best times throughout and several top
placements. In the Medley Relay "A" Tessa
Durdan-Shaw led her team in a record pace
backstroke leg, followed by
Chelsea Meudt in the breaststroke,
Jamie Cundiff in the butterfly and anchor
Lexie Comfort in the freestyle to a second
place finish, six hundredths of a second behind Sweet Home. Each relay
member swam
a Jamie Cundiff added a second place and personal best time in the 200 yd freestyle to the list of accomplishments and Chelsea Meudt swam a perfect 50 yd freestyle sprint. She finished first with a best time of 27.81, over two seconds ahead of runner-up Andrea Yunke from Sweet Home. Keeping her competition at bay, Chelsea Meudt added another first place and personal best of 1:04.64 in the 100 yd freestyle. Third place went to Lexie Comfort. In the 500 yd freestyle, Tessa Durdan-Shaw improved her time by over six seconds and ended up in fourth position, adding valuable points for the Outlaws. The girls' 200 yd freestyle "A" relay captured another second place behind host Sweet Home with Chelsea Meudt off to an explosive start, followed by Leah Berrey, Lexie Comfort and anchor Jamie Cundiff . Their combined time of 2:02.92 marked a best time for the Outlaws as well. Event 17, the 100 yd backstroke, was swum in an expanded two heat format to accommodate the large number of backstrokers from Sweet Home and North Marion. Sisters claimed two of the top five placements with Jamie Cundiff and Andie Lesowske , both swimming exceptional races. Probably the most exciting race turned out to be the battle for first place in the 100 yd breaststroke. Tessa Durdan-Shaw led Sweet Home's Marie Duncan with perfect turns and pull-outs but had to succumb in the end with a final time difference of five hundredths of a second. Anna Evered finished fifth with a personal best by 4 seconds. "Considering the
Outlaws
have limited training time and space, their accomplishments are
phenomenal,"
coach Hedemark commented. "It is their work ethic and spirit that will
bring
them continued success in and out of the pool."
