 Swimmers  face 3A State Champions

In a preview of the top 3A swim teams in the State, the Outlaw swimmers competed against the host team, State Champion Sherwood, Gladstone, Philomath, Stayton and Jefferson at the Sweet Home Invitational December 18. Not intimidated by the size and expertise of their opponents or their own disqualifications in three events, the Outlaws demonstrated that they will be part of the mix during District Championship finals.

The boys’ medley relay team with Casey Meudt, Morgan Mansker, Justin Hedemark and
Kyle Whipps swam within one second of their recently established new Sisters High School record and ended up with the third best time behind Sherwood and Sweet Home. However both Sisters and Sweet Home were disqualified, the first for a stroke infraction and the latter for an early take-off.

The Outlaw boys did not compete in the 200 yard freestyle event but finished second behind Sherwood in the 200 yards Individual Medley. Justin Hedemark clocked a time of 2:21.06 setting a new Sisters High School record by over three seconds.  Kyle Whipps swam into the top five among the State’s fastest sprinters in the 50 yard freestyle even though his time was off by one second+.

Another big time drop came in the 100 yard freestyle when Casey Meudt shaved almost five seconds off his best time and finished with a 1:01.45 in third place behind Sherwood’s Matt Grimes and Sweet Home’s Alex Holmes. The 200 yards freestyle relay team with Whipps, Mansker, Pyke and Kinzie ended up fifth among twelve “A” and “B” relay teams.

Another first place for the Outlaws came in the next event when Justin Hedemark secured  the top position in the 100 yard backstroke with a best time and new Sisters High School record of 1:03.17 replacing his own mark of 1:04.51. In the same event, Casey Meudt powered himself into a fourth place overall with a best time of 1:08.75 which marked a 4+ second drop from last year’s District Championship form.

On the girls’ side, the medley relay team with Andie Lesowske, Bree White, Kate Canja and Kalyn Brink improved this year’s best time by over three seconds. Lesowske led with a season best of 39.1 for her backstroke, followed by breaststroker Bree White and a 40 second leg, Kate Canja in the butterfly and Kalyn Brink with a 31.2 sec. freestyle anchor. Unfortunately the relay was disqualified for an illegal turn.

Kate Canja followed the relay with a top individual performance in the 200 yards freestyle. Her final time of 2:26.66 barely put her behind Sherwood’s Amanda Owen who finished in 2:25.63. Rachel Pilliod finished 6th in the 100 yards freestyle and Andie Lesowske added another 6th place in the 100 yards backstroke. The 4x100 yards freestyle relay with Kate Canja, Jill McConville, Rikki Glick and Kalyn Brink finished in fifth place overall.

The next meet takes the Outlaws to Redmond where they will compete in a modified meet format.
