In 2005, Mr. Cosby wanted a class that would motivate his advanced students. He felt that a guitar class would be a perfect fit. In Woods II, students work throughout the whole trimester constructing guitars. Working with the help of one of the best Luthiers (guitar makers) in the northwest, Jayson Bowerman, they were able to produce thirty guitars in one trimester. Jayson Bowerman works with a local company known as the Breedlove Guitar Company. After the students complete their guitars, they are given the choice to take the guitars home to keep, or sell the guitars with the school's help. Some of the students keep their guitars and use them to learn how to play traditional folk music in a class at Sisters High School called Americana.

In Woods II, students are building one of the most traditional designs in America , the Dreadnought. The guitars are made with Myrtle Wood, which only grows in the coastal range of Oregon . However, the guitar tops are made with Spruce, and the necks are made of Mahogany. All of the guitars are delicately perfected, and students spend hours putting their finishing touches on each guitar. If you are interested in an acoustic guitar made here in Sisters, Oregon , you may contact Mr. Cosby at cosbyt@outlawnet.com. You may also call the school at 541-549-4045 or come by to check out the guitars in person. Our school is located at 1700 W. McKinney Butte Rd. Sisters, Oregon 97759. Prices of the guitars vary and interested buyers may contact us to negotiate a price. One guitar in particular, built by Josh Mar, sold for $875.00 at “My Own Two Hands” in Sisters, Oregon.

If you are a Sisters High School student interested in joining the class and building your own guitar, you need to demonstrate responsibility and a good work ethic. As a prerequisite to Woods II, students must complete and excel in Woods I in order to be selected to take the Guitar-Building Class. After being accepted by Mr. Cosby, a $200 fee must be paid for the materials used throughout the class. Also, everyone needs to put in an additional one hour per week of their own time on top of the time spent during class. For more information, visit the Woods website or talk to Mr. Cosby.
