Pet Crabs Are you allergic to pet dandruff or pet hair, but you would like an animal friend? Well, a little crab would be the perfect pet for you. Hermit Crabs are in the “unusual” category. They are interesting and easy care companions. One reason that these animals make great pets is that they each have different personalities. They are active, and curious, and their low maintenance requirements make them perfect pets. As weird as this may sound, Hermit Crabs are not really crabs. They have small, soft abdomens that need protection. This is why the use unused snail shells. As they grow, they must find bigger shells, and owners must provide larger shells for their crab. Crab Care If you would like to own a pet crab, here is a list of some of the stuff you need to properly care for your pet. · An aquarium or another sort of tank with a tight fitting lid · An undertank heating pad · Low wattage lights and hood (optional but recommended) · At least 2 shallow water dishes · Natural Sea Sponges · Wood to climb on and other tank decorations (choya wood recommended) · Cuttlebone or some other calcium source · Bigger shells for your crab to move into · A half coconut for a Hermit Hut (it doesn’t have to be a coconut) Crab Food In the wild land Hermit crabs are omnivores. This means that they eat almost anything, such as fallen fruit, decaying wood, plants, leaf litter, and items washed ashore by the ocean. These little wonders with claws can locate their food in two ways. They will either smell it, or they see other crabs eating some food. To keep your crab healthy, you should make part of its diet brightly colored vegetables such as carrots and corn, but also make the rest of their meal a lot of variety. They can eat meat, fruit, and lettuce. Before you feed your crabs their meal, wash in water, (no soap) allow to dry, and dish up!
