history

Boat racing started in 1851.The United States faced the British in a race, across the Bermuda.  It was 60 miles in length. The United States won that race, and they also won many more against the British. The fishing boats were the direct ancestors of today’s racing boats. They were usually between seventeen to twenty feet in length, often with no deck. It is amazing that a tradition was built up around these fishing boats. where by those that were finished hauling or setting pots first would wait on the rest so that there could be a race for home. When the boats got better it gradually grew into a national sport.
