There are some very essential pieces of equipment that a chukar hunter needs. The most important things a chukar hunter needs are a pair of boots, shotgun, shells, water, dog and a hat. Everything else you can live without, but some stuff sure helps out a lot.

A good pair of boots is going to be in the $100 dollar range. You can by a pair for cheaper but you’ll end up with a lot of blisters on your feet. Water proof boots would be good in the winter but in the summer your feet will get hot. Your choice but I would go with the water proof boots so my feet at least stay dry.

There are tons of different types of shotguns and you could buy one for $200 or $2,000 dollars. If your only going to chukar hunt you want a gun that its not going to matter if it gets scratched or dented so I wouldn’t buy a $2000 dollar gun but I wouldn’t buy a cheap gun that could break easy. I hunt with a Remington 870 Wingmaster 20ga pump. It has a fairly long barrel so I can aim well and it can hold up to 3 inch shells but it weighs about six and a half pounds. It might not sound like much but its heavy when you get back to the truck after hiking 10 miles. The perfect gun for chukar hunting would be a 20ga, automatic, light gun with interchangeable chokes. The gun that is like this is the 20ga Benelli Montifeltro but unless you have $900 bucks to fork out I would go with something cheaper.

You could spend years trying to find the best type of shells because there are so many and they are all supposed to be the best. Personally I’ve hunted chukars with copper plated 7 ½ shot and regular lead 6 shot. My dad and I think 7 ½ shot is the best because of the bigger pattern it seems to really dust the birds. Other people disagree because it doesn’t have enough knock down power.

Hunting vests are also a very helpful thing. You can spend $15 to $100 on hunting vests; again you should buy whatever feels comfortable and has a low price. Cabelas and the Sportsmans Warehouse have a wide variety of hunting vests.

There are all sorts of bird dogs a person could choose from. Some people like to hunt chukars with flushers others like to hunt with pointers. You can pay $50 for a dog or you can pay $5,000. I would recommend getting a pointer because they can hold the birds until you get up to them. You have to be right on the tail of a flusher because he picks up scent and heads right to the birds and flushes them right away. So if your not there you’re out of luck.
