Blacksmiths need tools lots of tools. A very important tool is the power hammer. Power hammers have been around  along time. Long for most of us. The first power hammers ran off a water wheel. The water wheel would turn and lift up the head of the power hammer (the part that hits the hot steel is called the head). The next type and the ones they still use today is the one that ran off a regular engine. The engine is on the top back part of the power hammer. It has a crank shaft that comes out to a  wheel that lifts the head up and down.

Anvils were used every day. They were a very, very, very  important tool. The biggest ones way about 500 pounds.
