Meet Kathy Miner

Kathy earned her B.A. at the University of California at Berkeley in Fine Art in 1985, and she completed her Secondary Teacher Education in 1992. She received a Master's in Education, Special Education from Lewis and Clark College in 2000 and earned a Doctorate of Education in Educational  Leadership from the University of Oregon in June of this year. Dr. Miner spoke at the June 2006 Council of Chief State School Officers' annual conference on assessment and measurement in San Francisco.

Prior to her three years as Principal of Edwin Brown High School, Kathy served as the Behavior Resource Specialist at M.A. Lynch Elementary School in Redmond. During this time she facilitated the process for developing an alternative middle school program for the district. In addition, Kathy was a Special Education Teacher for the Bend-LaPine School District, the Upper School Head and Art teacher for Mount Bachelor Academy, and taught all subjects in a one room school for adjudicated boys.

As the principal of Edwin Brown High School, an alternative high school serving 130 students grades 9-12, Kathy has significantly improved the school culture. She has created programs to increase options for at-risk students including project based learning, culinary arts, a teen parent program, and an outdoor leadership program. Through her leadership and collaboration with staff, Brown has become a positive, supportive, safe, and fun place to work and learn.

When asked to identify the characteristics of a great school, Kathy included the following statements in her response to what a great school has:

  • "A great group of teachers who support each other, seek continued learning of their craft and truly love learning with students;
  • a supportive parent group that is meaningfully utilized in the school community, and participates in collaborative ways with teachers and leaders;
  • students who are creative, inquisitive and self-directed learners and who practice living in a community with respect, accountability and trustworthiness;
  • a nurturing, safe environment in which students and teachers can take academic risks, stretch and achieve;
  • a school community that celebrates art, music, poetry and dance and understands that these are critical elements in education."

She concluded her two page list with the words, "Most of all, a great school is about success, growth and . . . . FUN!

Kathy and her husband live in Sisters with their two children who are in the second and fourth grades at Sisters Elementary School.

Please join us in welcoming Kathy Miner to the Sisters School District and the Middle School.
