Track and field is a great sport for the exercise of almost every muscle
in your body. It helps your cardiovascular system, respiratory system,
and your muscular system. This is a great sport for anyone interested
because there is a variety of things to do in track, not just running,
like most people who don't participate think.
Many events in track are different between middle school track, high
school track, and olympic track. In middle school you can be entered in
the 1500 meter run, the 800 meter run, the 400 meter dash, the 200 meter
dash, the 100 meter dash, the 100 and 110 meter hurdles, discus, shot-put,
pole vault, high jump, long jump, 4x100 meter relay, and 4x200 meter relay.
In high school you can do all of those events plus the 3000 meter run,
javelin, triple jump, and 300 meter hurdles. Finally the extra events in
the olympics are 5,000 meter, 10,000 meter, 10k race walk, 20 km race walk,
50 km race walk, steeple chase, and hammer throw.
The running events are the most self explanatory, you just run the length
of meters of the event that you are entered into. In the high jump you
run up and jump over a bar, in long jump you run up and jump into the sand
as far as you can, in the discuss you take a heavy frisbee shaped object
and throw it as far as you can, in the shot-put you take a big steel ball
and throw it as far as you can, in the relays you run with a baton and
hand it off to people who run the same length, in the javelin throw you
take a big spear and throw it as far as possible, in triple jump you jump
three times and you jump into the sand, in the hurdles you run a length
jumping over hurdles throughout your run, in the pole vault you take a
bendy bar, plant it in the box, fling up, and go over the bar, and finally
for the hammer throw you just take a big rope thing with this ball at the
end and you throw it. (Look below for demonstrations of some of these
events.) |
