A math teacher, named Mr. Garland came into our school in September of 2006. When he came, he became a 7th and 8th grade math teacher. In this web page you will learn about things like; Mr. Garland’s homework policy, his grading policy, what he does in his free time, why he chose to be a 7th and 8th grade math teacher, and several other questions I have asked him. Please enjoy my web page.

What do you teach?

Mr. Garland is a Math teacher who teaches linear algebra, graphing, exponents, scientific notation, and many other sections of math. How to be a good person and to enjoy life is taught to all the kids by Mr. Garland exampling it himself. Mr. Garland is my math teacher and I enjoy being in his class. He does an excellent job of helping everyone who doesn’t understand what to do.

What grades do you teach?

Mr. Garland teaches 7th & 8th grade math. The 7th grade uses the purple Impact math book and goes though several chapters of that book. Everyone in 7th starts in 2 math but if you can pass a test that you must ask Mr. Garland for, and you might be able to go into 2/3 math or even 3 math. If you stay in 2 math you either go into 2/3 math in the 8th grade or 3 math in the 8th grade.

How do you teach?
As a teacher Mr. Garland prefers to do group work and discovery. Students must ask at least 3 other students for help before asking Mr. Garland. It makes students build bonds with other people they don’t usually talk to. He tries to get students to discover how to do the problems by themselves. Mr. Garland explains the concept every time even if most kids understand. Making everyone understand what he is trying to teach is one of the things Mr. Garland does well with.

What is your homework policy?

Homework shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes every night. You must turn it in on time to get full credit. If you turn it in late it is only worth half of the points. Plus he doesn’t tell you which homework you are going to turning in so you have to do all the homework he assigns just in case he collects it.

What is your disciplinary policy?

If you follow the rules Mr. Garland gives you, you should do fine and he will also be very happy that you could do the work that he told you to do. It will get you on his good list and might give you more time on bigger projects. He has a very high expectation, and he makes sure that all the students understand the rules.

Describe your ideal student.
A motivated, creative, and kind student is Mr. Garland’s ideal student. He or she should also come to school wanting to learn and know that making mistakes is okay because you know for the next time you make the mistake. You would be able to see easily and correct it before turning it in.

What do you do in your free time?
Rock climbing is what Mr. Garland loves to do in his free time. He goes almost every weekend and he loves to spend time with his wife, Megan, and his 11 month old child, Cooper, at Smith Rocks. He is an expert rock climber and even does a rock climbing class during a 3 day period called interim week.

What got you into teaching?

Mr. Garland wanted a job that had the same schedule as his wife. He was already very interested in teaching students and he enjoyed math. Sisters Middle School was looking for a new 7th and 8th math teacher so he took the job. I must add that I’m very happy that he took the job.

Do you like to teach and why?

For Mr. Garland teaching makes him happy. He loves to teach, he enjoys being around kids and learning some things he might not have know. He specifically states that “I think teaching is the best job for me!” He is one of the best math teachers that I have ever had.

Can you give me a short autobiography?
As a child Mr. Garland grew up in Beaverton Oregon, throughout his middle and high school careers he played every team spot until he focused on tennis. He then went to Southern Oregon University before going on a semester a sea trip around the world. When he got back he studied Environmental science at the University of Oregon. He moved back to Redmond Oregon after living in Colorado for a few years.

I have now told you things Mr. Garland expects anond his life story in a few succinct paragraphs. I hope you have learned a thing or two about him and feel like you should know him better than before. Enjoy the rest of my web page.
