Track has two main categories, running, and throwing. Running is among the harder of the two, as far as energy goes. From there running is split into two subcategories; long distance and sprints (dashes), each as hard as the other.

100 Meter Dash

The 100 meter dash is the shortest race and is just one quarter or strait of the track. Most running events are run in heats (rounds), usually 3 heats.

200 Meter Dash

The 200 meter is two lengths, a bend and a curve. In the 200 you have a staggered starts, which means that in order to run the same distance the farther lanes start more ahead, but everyone still runs the same length. Unlike the 100 the 200 requires a little bit of pacing.

400 Meter Dash

The 400 meter is one full lap around the track. This is the longest of the sprints and isn't so much of a dash as the others. The 400 requires more pacing and you need to kick it up on the last 100 meters.

800 Meter

The 800 meter is the shortest of the long distance races. It is two laps around the track. It seems that this race is fairly easy going and is somewhat of a jog put some participants run the whole thing at a quick pace.

1500 Meter

The 1500 meter is the longest race in track. This Race I think would be the toughest event to participate in and seems both physically challenging and mentally challenging. It is three laps and the 300 more meters. Pacing is a major part of the 1500.

4 x 100 Meter Relay

The 4 x 100 meter relay and 4 x 200 meter are the only "team" events in track. The 4 x 100 is where four people run a 100 meter the hand of a baton between an exchange zone which is usually 30 meters long. You are disqualified if you hand off the baton outside of the exchange zone.

4 x 200 Meter Relay

In the 4 x 200 meter relay each person runs a 200 meter dash and then like in the 4 x 100 hands of a baton to the next leg (team mate). This event is usually the last running event.
