In their last meet before District Championships, the Outlaws showed off some of their strengths to a field of very well prepared and talented swimmers in Special District 3. All ten teams competed in the Albany Sprint Invitational on Saturday, January 26.

Brittany Baldessari and Brian Greaney led the Outlaws with first and second places and several other swimmers gave notice that they will be in the top six at the upcoming championships.

Baldessari finished first in the 50 yards freestyle in a PR for this season. Her official time of 27.46 seconds put her ahead of Marist’s Mary Cummings (28.26) and Junction City’s Melissa Everhart (28.59). Baldessari also touched the wall first in the 50 yard backstroke sprint (31.03).

Brian Greaney added another first place for the Outlaws with a good swim in the same event. His 50 yard backstroke time of 27.2 seconds put Central’s top swimmer, Kent Tolzmann, easily into second place.

Greaney came in second in the 200 yard freestyle event when Philomath’s Chris Leonard caught Greaney on the last stroke of the race. Leonhard finished in 1:59.60 to Greaney’s time of 1:59.88.

The girls medley relay team with Baldessari(30.5), Flanders(36.7), Pledger(33.1) and Satko(26.8) battled top state contender Cascade(2:06.8) until the very end. The Outlaws ended up second with a time of 2:07.2 and Stayton in third place (2:08.06). “If we drop one second per leg, the girls will be in medal contention and possibly another trip to State” coach Hedemark reported.

The boys fared almost as well in the 200 yards medley relay with Holden Sellentin in the backstroke, Nick Luz in the breaststroke, Brian Greaney in the butterfly and Justin Duvenick as anchor in the freestyle. “If the boys relay wants to be represented at State, they will have to drop about a second each” coach Hedemark. Sweet Home finished first (1:56), followed by Marist (1:58) and the Outlaws in a time of 2:00.

Courteney Satko added a third place for the team with a good performance in her 100 yard Individual Medley (1:11.6) race. Freshman Tia Berg finished 5^th and Chelsea Flanders 7^th.  Top finisher in the 100 yards freestyle was Felicia Pledger followed by Courteney Satko in a PR of 1:02.2. Cascade’s Crystal Kibby won the event, followed by Blanchett’s Marie Miner and Marist’s Ingrid Woelfel.

On the boys’ side of the 100 yards freestyle, top finisher Justin Duvenick was out-touched for 4^th place by Stayton’s Ryan Lackner. Duvenick clocked a best time of 1:01.3 to Lackner’s of 1:01.2.

Several disqualifications in relays and individual races on the Outlaws’ side gave the competition additional top six finishes. “We got that out of our system and are ready for the championships without yellow slips” coach Hedemark commented.

Special District 3 Championships start February 8 at 9:00 a.m. with warm-ups and 10:00 a.m with competition.
